Climate Change Increasing Workplace Costs, Hazards
As global temperatures rise due to climate change, workers are facing increasing health risks and reduced productivity during extreme heat. Productivity begins to decline at temperatures above 24-26 degrees Celsius and can be significantly reduced at around 33-34 degrees Celsius. The International Labour Organization predicts that by 2030, productivity losses could reach 2.2 percent of global work hours or $2.4 trillion in output. This affects outdoor workers in sectors like construction and agriculture and is particularly challenging for the world’s 170 million migrant workers. Inadequate regulations and enforcement exacerbate the problem, making it crucial to establish clear workplace standards and prioritize worker safety in the face of climate change.
