Texas judge strikes down law that would ban city-mandated water breaks
A Texas judge has ruled unconstitutional a law signed by Governor Greg Abbott that would have banned certain local ordinances in the state. The law, known as the Texas Regulatory Consistency Act and nicknamed the “Death Star Bill” by opponents, aimed to eliminate various local rules, including mandatory water breaks in cities like Austin and Dallas. The city of Houston challenged the law, arguing that it exceeded the governor’s powers. The law also would have nullified city ordinances related to paid sick leave, minimum wages, and safety training. While supporters claimed it would reduce regulatory complexity, critics saw it as a power grab. The state has appealed the decision to the Texas Supreme Court.
