Cal/OSHA Cautions Employers to Protect Workers from Heat
Amid excessive heat warnings, Cal/OSHA urged California employers, particularly in sectors like agriculture, construction, landscaping, and warehousing, to protect workers from heat illness. Chief Jeff Killip recommended strategies like adjusting work hours. While emphasizing outdoor workplace regulations, the agency also emphasized addressing indoor heat hazards through injury and illness prevention programs. Prevention of outdoor workers’ heat illness includes water, shade, training, and breaks. California is developing an indoor workplace heat illness prevention standard, and Federal OSHA is creating its own standards. Cal/OSHA promoted Safe + Sound Week, advocating for employee well-being and productivity. California joined the West Coast Challenge with Oregon and Washington, supported by AIHA, ASSP, NSC, NIOSH, and OSHA, promoting proactive safety practices.
