Contractor Labeled ‘Severe Violator’ After Fatality at Hyundai Metaplant
- Boston’s new construction ordinance, effective from December 1, 2023, mandates that construction and demolition contractors must submit site-specific safety plans and confirm compliance.
- The ordinance was developed in response to prior fatal construction accidents in the city through a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders.
- Construction and demolition sites seeking permits from the Inspectional Services Department (ISD) must implement safety plans, site safety monitoring, and appoint coordinators for larger projects.
- ISD gains enforcement powers, including issuing violations, work stoppages, permit revocations, and fines of up to $300 on non-compliant parties. The city will host educational webinars and provide free OSHA 30-hour health and safety training.
