OSHA Finds Sawmill Failed to Remediate Exposed Saw Following a Worker’s Death — Occupational Health & Safety
OSHA found that Missouri Mats, a sawmill in Brashear, Missouri, failed to address an exposed saw that led to the death of a 21-year-old worker. Despite being issued a letter to make changes to protect employees from amputation hazards, the owner, Don Gibson, did not comply. OSHA returned to the site and found the hazardous condition still present. An imminent danger notice was placed on the equipment, prompting Gibson to correct the safety hazard. OSHA has proposed $346,954 in fines for the company, citing two willful, 53 serious, and two other-than-serious violations. Missouri Mats has 15 days to comply or contest the findings.
