OSHA Says Hard Hats Are Out, Helmets Are In

  • OSHA replaces traditional hard hats with modern helmets for enhanced worker protection, addressing the 2020 Bureau of Labor Statistics report on head injuries.
  • Traditional hard hats lacked essential features like side impact protection, chin straps, and ventilation, leading to vulnerabilities.
  • The updated safety helmets, detailed in OSHA’s November 22, 2023, bulletin, include advanced design, materials, and additional elements such as face shields, goggles, hearing protection, and communication systems.
  •  OSHA recommends safety helmets in construction, oil and gas, high-temperature work, low-risk settings, tasks involving electrical work and heights, and when mandated by regulations or industry standards.
