SB 553 Workplace Violence Prevention: 12 Answers to Employers’ Frequently Asked Questions

  • Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill No. 553 into law on September 30, 2023, mandating comprehensive workplace violence prevention plans for California employers with specific requirements.
  • The law doesn’t establish new reporting requirements; employers must report only “serious” injuries or fatalities as per existing regulations.
  • Worksites with less than 10 employees not accessible to the public can be exempt, but healthcare facilities must comply with the Cal/OSHA regulation.
  • The new law applies only to California employers and their California employees and permits workplace violence plans to be part of an injury and illness prevention program (IIPP). There will likely be an opportunity for public comment in 2024 during Cal/OSHA rulemaking on workplace violence.
